Brian Barden, longtime road agent for the town of Dublin, NH and a member of the Dublin Fire Department demonstrated his circa 1900 Lawson Hit & Miss Motor that powered a circa 1940 Alaska Freezer Ice Cream maker. Brian purchased the system for $600 several years ago from the Brattleboro Retreat when they realized that it was easier to buy the ice cream from a local supplier than make it with the Lawson/Alaska Freezer system. The complexity of this machinery is fascinating. The Lawson Hit & Miss motor (technically it’s an engine) was a blessing for many farmers at the turn of the last century as it was able to power everything from circular saws to mechanical log splitters.
